The construction of the BK Arena, a collaborative effort between the Rwandan Government through the Rwanda Housing Authority (RHA) and the Turkish firm Summa, commenced in January 2019. Oversight for the construction of the indoor arena was managed by the RHA. Progress on the BK Arena's construction was notably swift, employing approximately 1,000 to 2,000 workers operating in day and night shifts. As of mid-June 2019, the indoor arena had reached a completion status of at least 70%, with a projected finish date slated for July of the same year.

Subsequently, on 9 August 2019, the arena was formally inaugurated with a basketball match between Patriots BBC and REG BBC, graced by the presence of Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

In May of both 2021 and 2022, the BK Arena played host to the pioneering Basketball Africa League (BAL) and its subsequent edition in Kigali.
